OUR SPEAKERS

Che Frausto and Becca Peterson

Che and Becca from Maui Nui Seabird Recovery Project (MNSRP) spoke to us today.  They walked us through some of their projects to study the habits, habitats, and dangers facing these birds.  A seabird is at sea 80 to 90% of its life and has webbed feet, tube nose, dull plumage, and coloring to match its habitat.  They talked about the Hawaiian Petrel, the Wedge tailed Shearwater, and the Newell Shearwater.

Staff and volunteers in the seabird recovery project study the different seabird colonies on Maui, look for new colonies, use recording devises to understand and watch these birds.  Some dangers are cats, mongoose, dogs, pigs, and rats.

ROTARY FOUNDATION

Barry Hyman reported that our club has donated $8,382 to the Rotary Foundation so far this year for an average of $192 per member.  Of our 43 members, 35 have contributed.  One name of the 8 who haven’t donated yet was drawn to receive enough of the accumulated credits to qualify as a Paul Harris fellow, and Erika Tait’s name was drawn.

Mark Harbison reported on several local and international projects we have been funding:

  • We donated $1,452 to the Kihei Youth Center for a new stove, hood, and microwave oven.

  • We donated $1,500 for new library shelving and $1,500 for books to Kihei Elementary school.

  • We helped Mark Barry and Kelly Trang fund their project that distributes ski boot liners for people in Homer, Alaska to use as winter boots.

  • We donated $1,800 to RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards)

  • We have been donating to several international projects in India, Myanmar, and North Thailand.

Mark’s excellent and detailed report will be in the next newsletter.
