SUNSHINE REPORT

The club welcomed Cynthia Clark to our meeting for the first time since her surgery for ovarian cancer in January. She is half way through her surgery recovery before she begins her chemotherapy in 3 weeks. The club was so happy to see Cynthia, (who, being the great Rotarian she is, donated items to the club’s silent auction and solicited ticket sales!)
You can also donate financially to Cynthia's GoFundMe account by clicking on this link.

Billie Moksnes had a birthday today!
Nice to have Larry Shapiro and Carol Perry back.
TODAY'S SPEAKER
Maui Police Department Chief Tivoli S. Faaumu
Chief Faamu talked about leadership. He feels his job is to monitor needs and provide resources to the people he leads and the community he is accountable to. Chief Tivoli explained the numbers of police, the districts, and issues the police face. Most noticeably, post-911 the responsibilities of the Maui Police department has increased tremendously including addressing social issues like homelessness, as well as terrorism diligence.
During his tenure, the police department position vacancies has fallen from 28% to 4%. He has worked to instill a sense of community within the department. But he said it is still an ongoing challenge to handle all of their responsibilities given the increase in their workload. He encouraged the community to call him or notify the department about any concerns the public has. He stressed his and his department’s responsibility is to be accountable to the public.
In the Q&A section, Chief Tivoli shared that there is a questionnaire on the police department’s website that the public is welcomed to use to community concerns, suggestions, etc.. His goal is not as much to enforce laws as it is for the public to comply with laws. To achieve this his department is spending some of their enforcement budget on education.
