INSPIRATION

Susan Bradford

"The Builders", a poem by Mary Oliver, reminded Susan of what we do as Rotarians.

On a summer morning

I sat down

on a hillside

to think about God—

a worthy pastime.

Near me, I saw

a single cricket;

it was moving the grains of the hillside

this way and that way.

How great was its energy,

how humble its effort.

Let us hope

it will always be like this,

each of us going on

in our inexplicable ways

building the universe.

TODAY'S SPEAKER

District 5000 Governor Nalani Flynn

Our speaker was District 5000 Governor Nalani Flynn, the first District Governor of Hawaiian descent. When a colleague explained that Rotary helped people locally and internationally like the Credit Union where they worked, she realized Rotary was "on the product", the real thing

Nalani stressed the following three overriding aspects of Rotary club leaders and members:

1.    Rotary Foundation

Supporting the Rotary Foundation. She had an impressive quote, partially: You will never see the person for whom you restored to sight; you will never drink from the fresh water well your money provided, never sit in the shade of a tree you helped plant— all the things done for real people in real places by the money you give to the Rotary Foundation. She pointed out that in three years, all the donations we make come back to the club as grants to help fund our local and international service projects.

2.    Education

Nalani highlighted the importance of education in providing people with freedom and self-reliance. She told us about a time when her Rotary club on the Wainae coast of O’ahu, the most poverty stricken area of the island, didn't have enough members to supply dictionaries to the 1,200 3rd graders and some members suggested ordering fewer dictionaries. Knowing that 1 in 6 adults on O’ahu cannot read, she drummed up enough support to complete the full project.

3.     Membership

DG Flynn said how important new members are in providing the manpower, support, and leadership we need to continue and grow. She stressed the importance of having a club trainer to lead the critical mission of integrating new members and showing them how much energy you get back when you're plugged in beyond just the weekly social gathering. One idea: mentorship-matching an experienced member with a new member, both of whom have similar interests, vocations, etc. At her meeting with our Board of Directors earlier today, she asked us to challenge each member to bring in one new person who wants to serve the local and global community as a club member between now and June 30, 2018. Significantly increased membership is required to help produce a world-class Rotary International Convention in Honolulu in 2020. D5000 now has only 1,700 members, but 2,500 Hawaii Rotarians will be needed for pre and post functions, including hosting guests from around the world on neighbor islands for events like dinners, barbecues, cruises, etc, even partnering with Honolulu Rotary clubs to help with the myriad convention hosting duties. Her goal is to share the authentic, full aloha spirit with everyone coming to the international convention.

DG Flynn concluded her remarks by an example of “how to actually do it “in a leadership role—by example! Walking the talk, for her induction speech she “simply”:

• Presented two Paul Harris medallions.

• Became a “White Hat” Paul Harris Fellow ($5,000 contributed)

• Brought in two new members.

ROTARY FOUNDATION

Foundation Chair Barry Hyman and DG Flynn presented member Paige Fontaine with her Paul Harris Plus 3, three-sapphire Paul Harris pin for having donated $4,000 to the Rotary Foundation.

BIKE AWARENESS AWARD

President John then conducted a brief roast of member Kit Hawkins who recently completed the 203-mile Seattle-to- Portland cycling event and making it a club fundraiser by soliciting pledges of 5 cents or 10 cents per mile, accusing him of completing only 156 miles and getting lost besides. President Moore presented Kit with a pocket combination compass and whistle to help him find his way and call for help in the future.

CLUB'S 39TH ANNIVERSARY

President John led a brief celebration of the club’s 39th anniversary pointing out that our club is 60% women and so, this is as old as the club can get. He also gave a pop quiz on past D5000 and club presidents, like who was the first president of our club, who were the district governors from our club, and finally, how many people have been president of our club more than once. The answer to the last one was none, and John doesn't want to be the first, so we need a volunteer to be president-elect.

LOKELANI SCHOOL INTERACT CLUB

President John then presented the four Lokolani Interact students and Advisor Fitzpatrick with the club’s gift of $500 for helping to raise $2,000 cash and $700 worth of supplies at our School Supply Drive a couple of weekends ago. $500 will also be given to Kihei Elementary, Kamali'i Elementary and Kihei Youth Center.

Cathy Fitzpatrick, the new Lokeloni Student Council advisor, told us that she thought Rotary might be able to help her design the required service project guidelines and contacted our member Margie Flores, who suggested starting an Interact Club. The Lokelani Interact Club had its first meeting today and our four young guests were elected as club officers. They described their individual projects for us. Maggie Martin, club president, told us how they helped collect funds at our Safeway School Supply Drive, Kyla Leonard told us about setting up an after school program to help empower students, Raiden Rivira is starting a school-wide recycling project to keep reusable items out of landfill and secretary Sumara Stanton told us that she and other students will be helping to monitor the rescue tubes we've installed on the beaches.

Texas and Louisiana are just beginning what we know will be a long road to recovery after Hurricane Harvey and Irma.  When disaster strikes, Rotarians reach out and ask how they can help. Rotary International staff contact district governors in affected areas to determine how best to direct any offers of aid. To that end, they have been in touch with governors in Texas, Louisiana and the Caribbean about hurricane relief. They have also reached out to leaders in district 9101 regarding the mud slides in Sierra Leone, in South Asia and in Nigeria to determine how best to direct support for their populations after devastating floods in both regions, and in Mexico after the earthquake.

Leaders in North America have responded by making two Donor Advised Funds under The Rotary Foundation available to accept contributions for hurricane relief: The Gulf Coast Disaster Relief DAF was established to assist communities devastated by Hurricane Harvey. The Hurricane Emergency Relief DAF is accepting contributions for Hurricane Irma disaster recovery.

If you would like to help please click on this link. You can contribute online with a credit card or follow the instructions for contributions by check or wire transfer. You will need to provide the specific name of the Rotary Foundation Donor Advised Fund and the account number.
