TODAY'S SPEAKER
Friends of the Children's Justice Center of Maui
Patty Hemmen introduced Paul Tonnessen from the Friends of the Children’s Justice Center of Maui (FCJC), a private, non-profit corporation, founded in 1989 by a non-partisan group of community and business leaders concerned with the social welfare of children and families who have been traumatized by abuse and severe neglect.
Emotional abuse, neglect, physical abuse, and sexual abuse are all different forms of child abuse, but victims include men, women and children of all ages.
Paul shared statistics describing the shockingly high percentage of Maui County children who are abused, usually by someone close to the child, and who commit suicide.
The FCJC mission is to work to heal children after they have been assaulted or abused by providing assistance to abused and neglected children, promoting prevention of child abuse and neglect, and supporting the Children’s Justice Center of Maui.
The group has been together for 27 years, totally funded by private funds. Often their funds far exceed what the budget totals. Over and over he repeated the motto ‘Broken children become broken adults’. Their group tries to break that cycle. Last year they helped 782 children.
In the past year the FCJC has:
• Provided funding for direct services to more than 900 children
• Delivered over 2,000 children’s Christmas gifts
• Distributed our annual 20-page prevention newspaper supplement to more than 24,000 households
• Informed 3,000 readers through two newsletter publications
• Reached 8,000 children and parents through community events
• Educated 500 new parents through Shaken Baby DVD distribution
THE FCJC receives Federal, State or County funding. Their funding comes from the Bradley and Victoria Geist Foundation, the Teresa Hughes Trust, Hyundai Championship Golf Tournament and companies and individuals through several fundraisers during the year. And they do all of this with one paid staff person and many dedicated volunteers.
You can visit their website at this link.

ROTARY DISTRICT 5000 YOUTH PROTECTION POLICY
REQUIRED VOLUNTEER AFFIDAVIT
The District 5000 Policy Manual states that it is the duty of all Rotarians, Rotarians’ spouses, partners, and other volunteers who participate in Rotary youth programs to complete and submit a Volunteer Affidavit form.
This is required to help fulfill Rotary International District 5000's (“District 5000”) commitment to creating and maintaining the safest possible environment for all participants in Rotary activities, to safeguard as much as possible the welfare of children and young people with whom we come into contact, and to prevent physical, sexual, or emotional abuse.
If you are going to be participating in any of our Rotary Club of Kihei-Wailea youth programs, click here to download either a Microsoft Word version or fillable PDF version of the Volunteer Affidavit form. Please complete the form and bring it to any club meeting or mail it to Rotary Club of Kihei-Wailea, P.O. Box 175, Kihei, HI 96753. Our club will pay the $10 fee for processing the confidential background check for all members in good standing.
WALK TO SUPPORT WORLD POLIO DAY
Past President Kit Hawkins conducted a quiz of his own to promote the fun, casual, easy going, short beach walk with prizes, followed by no host breakfast at Fred's Tacos to fund Rotary International's final push to End Polio Now.
The answer to "What is 5,808 feet?" is 1.1 miles, which equals 2,904 steps. At 1 cent per step you can donate $29.04. 2 cents per step would be a donation of $58.08.
Please join in for the fun and to help end polio.
Please let Kit Hawkins know if you're coming. 276-6487 kithawkins43@gmail.com.
