Dave Ballaine read our Inspiration, “Life Should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a well preserved body but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand late in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming" Woo woo, what a ride!”

TODAY'S SPEAKER
Bo Mahoe
Margie Flores introduced us to our speaker. He is a Maui Vietnam Veteran.
He listed ten new things for us to learn. There are seven departments in the military. Army, Air Force, Navy/Marines, Homeland Security which houses the Coast Guard, Health Department with the Surgeon General and NOAA in the Department of Commerce, as well as the Philippine soldiers who fought with MacArthur and the Gold Star Families. All are entitled to VA benefits.
When our speaker joined the military there were four ways to go in. An invitation from a Congressional Representative (Academy), Enlist with a College or Recruiter, Judge ruling of jail or Army and as a Draftee. Dodgers and objectors were escaping to Canada, Denmark, Sweden and Norway. They were hunted down! The draft ended in 1973.
Dates for the Vietnam war beginning vary but the official date is February 28, 1961 to April 30, 1975. Bo was in the infantry and was trained at Fort Ord winter for two months basic training, two months Infantry, 2 week leadership class then returned to Maui.
Maui County has about 11,000 out of Hawaii's 121,000 vets. Several hundrred live on Molokai, a few on Lanai and the rest on Maui. Kalaupapa Peninsula is a separate county and has 3 vets among their 88 residents.
He gave his brother his surf board and his sister his VW car and headed off the Vietnam.

He excelled in typing and did some clerk work before being helicoptered into the jungle for 30 to 40 day missions as a "Pointman". He was small and fit into the tunnels. He was valuable because of his small stature and his ability to blend in with the enemy. He recognized all the fruits in the jungle and likened the place to Costco of the tropical jungle!

Returning to Maui Bo has worked to improving the benefits for returning Vets. There are 11,000 in Maui 45% of whom are over 65. Beau is on the Veteran Council which aids Maui Vets with the problems associated with reentry. Kathy Hass, one of our members and a Navy Nurse has expanded the benefits to Guan and Samoa. The care is in Primary Health Care and Mental Health Care.

Bo also mentioned the Nisei Museum, where we had our club tour two weeks ago, and which is open six days a week from noon to four. It honors the 442 and 100th Battalions who were the most decorated in the second world war.

November is Veterans Month and there are several events planned this weekend to honor them. UH Maui will host a Veteran Breakfast, St. Anthony’s will hold an assembly and lunch with an 8 pound turkey for each vet, Upcountry will host a Polo Game fundraiser for wounded members, Makawao will have a Ceremony at 9am, Kalama Park will hold a picnic and Saturday November 11 King Kahmemea Golf Club will hold a dinner to welcome Veterans-the first of three to specifically honor Vietnam Vets. November 21 there will be a Rosary Service and Hana is holding a four day retreat for Indigenous Veterans-the sixth year. He finished by thanking all veterans for their service and the service of spouses.

At one minute after midnight November 11, all Veterans simply ask us to be thankful for our hard-won peace and freedom. Questions after the talk were directed to Agent Orange and it’s effect on veterans and the generations to follow. Studies are being done.

POTENTIAL CLUB SERVICE PROJECT

"They will keep my feet warm until I get back on my feet"

Mark Barry showed a short newscast video about the Boots for the Homeless program he started in Anchorage with shipping assistance from Seattle Rotarians. Mark is helping people get back on their feet one step at a time with boots he's donated  to the homeless at Bean's Cafe instead of letting them end up in a landfill. Click image to play the video, which has a very poignant ending. Perhaps we can help Mark continue this valuable project.
