WELCOME TO OUR CLUB LUNCHEON MEETING AT MULLIGANS
The meeting was called to order by President John Moore at 12:10, at Mulligans.  All were greeted with hugs and handshakes.  Stuart Karlan led us in the pledge.
INSPIRATION
Patty Hemmen shared a quote from Michelle Obama.

“Do not bring people in your life who weigh you down.  And trust your instincts…good relationships feel good.  They feel right.  They don’t hurt.  They’re not painful.  That’s not just with somebody you want to marry, but it’s with the friends that you choose.  It’s with the people you surround yourselves with.”
Membership:  Steve Moksnes encouraged each to bring a friend to lunch at one of our meetings.  He donated $50 to Rotary Foundation for the first 2 guests who are invited.

VOCATIONAL TALK
Joanne Doell
Joanne was born in Wailuku, and lived until Junior High there.  At that time she moved with her family to California and made the adjustments needed to fit into a new culture.  After high school she spent 4 years traveling and working in Europe, learning languages, working at a variety of jobs.  At some point she received a BA and MA in speech pathology, and moved through the teaching world in a variety of jobs, teaching various things.  She became a Rotarian in 2006, and was a past president in 2014.

Mark Barry shared club flags from clubs in Nairobi and Ghana.  He talked of continuing the vocational training for pediatric surgeons.  He is working with Mark Harbison on Rotary grants to help.

President John's Review of the first 6 months:

Vision:

Through the day of ‘vision talk’ the club was invited to share ideas of the vision for this club this year.  John came up with several things to emphasize.  They are:

  1. Reengage our fellowship

  2. Create small projects

  3. Good speakers

  4. Fun ideas to get participation

  5. Build exceptional board

  6. Get newsletter going again

  7. Vocational talks

  8. Educational programs

  9. Charter another interact club.  We have actually started two, one at Kihei Charter school and one at Lokalani Intermediate.  We already have one at Seabury Hall.

This year to date:

  • School supply drive

  • Food drive at Safeway

  • Pau Hana’s at Keawakapu Beach

  • Maui Day of Peace participation

  • District assembly

  • Brainstorming meeting for the fundraiser

  • Distributed dictionaries at Kamalii Intermediate, Kihei Elementary and Kihei Charter Schools

  • Polio fundraiser walk

  • Fall Ball with Seabury Hall Interact Club

  • Slipper project for Kihei Elementary school

  • Angel presents to St. Theresa's for 33 kids who may have otherwise not gotten presents

  • Career day at Lokalani where 10 Rotary members participated by telling of their vocation.

  • Christmas party at Maui Homeless Shelter where Santa visited as well.

  • Installed 40 rescue tubes along South Maui beaches.  One life saved so far that we know of.

  • We have two new members in 6 months.

  • Youth protection forms have been filled out by members who will be working with the youth of the community.

For the rest of the year:

  • Mark Harbison is working on a grant for a project in India.  Rotary’s part will be $100,000.

  • Mark Barry is working on a Ghana project and looking for grant dollars.

  • Elizabeth Kemmish walked us through the usage of the rescue tubes.  John emphasized the need to keep them maintained and replenished when needed.

  • Mark Harbison and Joanne Doell are working on a Rotaract club at the college that may be organized by the end of the year.

  • We need more volunteers for all the good ideas the board has deemed the club will be doing.  When you sign up for something it is so important to follow through.

  • Charlotte Smith will talk at Lokelani on Polio.
