DENTAL HYGIENE LESSONS AT KAMALII SCHOOL
Thursday, February 8

The director of the U. H. Maui Dental Hygiene School, Miss Rosie Vierra, has set up programs for her dental hygiene students to visit Maui schools along with volunteer members of the Maui County Dental Society to teach dental healthcare to the students. The team at Kamali'i Elementary on Thursday consisted of four dental hygiene students, two hygenists and assistants from Dr. Kelly Adams office and Scott Kanamori, one of the volunteer dentists.

The presentations the dental hygiene team made at Kamali'i Sschool were:

  • Learning proper brushing techniques, which they demonstrate on stuffed animals with life-size dentures.

  • Learning how to floss between all the teeth, which the kids practice by using plastic string to remove play dough stuck between the bumps on a plastic tray, like removing food from between teeth.

  • Learning which foods are good for your teeth and which foods will cause cavities. For this each student was given a picture of a food and asked to put it on the side of a display for "good" food or the side for "bad" food.

The kids went back to their classrooms with a new toothbrush, dental floss, tooth paste and an Angry Birds sticker.

Scott said that our club could invite the dental hygiene team and him to do their presentation with kids at any location.

TODAY' SPEAKER
Dustin Metzler
Margie Flores introduced us to Dustin MetzlerDustin and his son DJ from Makawao started KindKids USA a couple years ago when DJ came to his Dad and asked if he could start a business.  DJ wanted to collect recyclables in his area and sell them for money.  His Dad suggested he keep the money but give 10% of what he made to some sort of charity.  Other kids on Maui were attracted to the same idea, which sparked interest on the mainland and has lead into the formation a national organization. KindKids is now in 10 states.  All kids need to join is to have an idea for making money, and make the KindKids Pledge to give 50% of their earnings to someone else, to ‘pay it forward’ .  Each kid chooses where to donate their pay-it-forward money. Dustin gave us several examples of kids who have started their own businesses, and the inspiring different ways they have given.  What a noble idea for kids to make money and learn the value of giving and service.  Generating new Rotarians was one comment!
