MEETING AT MULLIGANS ON MARCH 7, 2018
Karin Carlson announces the updated net donations from our fundraiser total
$16,046!!
The Rotary meeting was opened at 12:05 at Mulligans on the Blue by our esteemed President John Moore.  The first item of business was to meet and greet those around us.  Mark Harbison led us in the pledge to the flag.
Karin Carlson shared a quote from Maya Angelou, “I have learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel”.
Special guests Jessie ONeil-Prest and Lauren Lott from Kihei Elementary school were present to receive $2300 from our club to help them remodel their school library.  Part of that gift was in matching funds, thanks to Mark Harbison’s efforts.
TODAY'S SPEAKER
Mike Ito
Margie Flores introduced our guest speaker Mike Ito from Maui Electric.
 
Mike shared Maui’s electricity history and present statistics.  The first lights to turn on Maui happened in 1886. 
They now have 70,000 customers in Maui County, with 300 employees.
 
$150,000 is given to United Way each year, with other donations given as well.
The population on Maui in 2017 was 154,000, and the projected population in 2030 will be 195,000.  In 2045 the goal for Maui Electric is to be 100% renewable energy.  Clean energy planning needs to be reliable, economical, clean, and smart.
 

How can we help? 

1. We can buy energy efficient appliances and lighting. 

2.  Sign on for the ‘time of use’ program to use energy when the rates are at their lowest during a 24-hour period.

 

3.  Participate in community meetings to make sure your voice matters in energy plans.

ROTARY FOUNDATION
Barry Hyman gave some history of Paul Harris recognition, which started in 1957.  He presented a PH pin and medallion to Manula as a gift from her husband Klaus
Gloria Lukens presented guest Manula a club Rotary pin she’s had since Paige was club president back a few years.
ANNOUNCEMENTS
  1. We still want to schedule a club picnic.  But need a chair for that.

  2. The club board is looking for project ideas for the last few months of this Rotary year.

  3. April 7th is the District Assembly.

  4. April 21st is the food drive for Maui Food Bank to be held at Safeway with the help of the Lokelani students.  Two- hour shifts.

  5. As a side note for the Rotary Foundation, John announced Lokelani Intermediate school Interact club raised $226 for Polio that will be sent in by our club.

  Elisa Rummel has left for the mainland to be with her Mom who is quite ill.

THE DREADED PRESIDENT'S QUIZ
John gave us the Daylight Saving Time quiz, which we seemed to pass with flying colors!
MAGIC MARBLE
The pot today has $640, with 28 blue and 1 gold marble.  Tom Sawyer drew a blue marble.  So, on we go to next week
The meeting ended with the four way test
