ROTARY IN ACTION
These photos were taken at the year-end celebration with the Interact Club at Lokelani. They showed us a 45-minute video they did themselves highlighting the ten service projects they did this year. RCKW members who attended were PE Joanne, Margie, Elizabeth (who brought cupcakes), Gary (who brought the water), Gloria and John.

Below you will see photos of the Interact Club's meeting and samples of the PowerPoint.

TOUR OF MAUI LAVENDER FARM, UPCOUNTRY, MAUI 5/24/18
The free tour for our members began about 10:00 am. At 4,000 feet, this botanical 26 acres showed us a wide variety of Maui flora:  all manner of lehua from pale pink to yellow, orange and red, a variety of King, Queen and Pincushion Protea, English and French lavender and a unique-to-Maui-variety that mixed the English and French together to create a dark and fragrant newbie. Real Hawaiian varieties of uki uki—with blueberries to dye kapa cloth and kipu kipu fern—with its long, thin, sword-like leaves just right for haku lei are among plants used for a variety of protocol ceremonies. Lots of olive trees with tiny nubs growing handily, large shrubs of Podocarpus Gracilior—graceful, frilly and sometimes called the Fern Pine, and Wisteria—we missed the April bloom—fill the garden in with a variety of trees of apple, peach, cross between a small red apple and Maui’s wild Mountain apple and assorted other plants such as Heliotrope, California Golden Poppies and who-knows-what-else. A small and colorful children’s garden has two playhouses—all overlooking Maui’s central alluvial plain through Italian Cypress above the road to Haleakala.  The small but delightful gift shop has a variety of scones and donuts, banana bread, and brioches along with coffees, teas, fizzy drinks; these complement a small arsenal of lavender products such as creams, balms, essence oils, sprays and that all-time-fav—lavender blossoms’ bags to scent clothes in the dryer. What’s not to like! Kudos to Margie, again, for setting up a great tour!
MARK HARBISON BRINGS HOME THE GOLD!!
President John Moore and Mark Harbison celebrate as First Place Winner for International Grant Projects for a large club (our new designation). Thank you, Mark, for all your hard work  in securing matching grants for our many projects!
OPENING THE MEETING

President John opened the meeting and then read this inspiration: "Kindness is more than deeds. It is an attitude, an expression, a look, a touch. It is anything that lifts another person."

TODAY'S SPEAKER

Richard Hogeboom, Ph.D.

Rift, "Rebellion" and the Future of Spain,

Richard presented the history of the Catalan independence movement in a way that would of put us in the middle of the story of Catalan, to feel, experience, and visualize the issues and hopes for better governance by giving us the responsibilities of a resident, including dividing us into a group of long-term Catalan residents and more recently arrived residents and asking  us to vote for or against independence.

The central question he posed was "Should Catalan be allowed to become an independent country, separate from Spain?".

He said that Catalan exemplifies independence movements worldwide, fueled by passions, shared histories and group identities.

He gave the following comparison of the results between violent suppression or negotiation with separatist movements:  “When central governments crackdown on independence movements, political and economic instability and even violence are the usual outcomes which inflame secessionist passions.” Instead, more effective responses have been:

  • Give a legitimate legal path to a secession vote.

  • Structure the vote with a wider range of alternatives.

  • Negotiate  “reasonable power transfer to regional governments".

When Britain and Canada did so, Scottish & Quebecois independence votes failed

Here is the slideshow Richard presented. Start the show by clicking the right-pointing arrow at the bottom of the slide. The three slides with a               in the middle are videos. Click the arrows to see the videos.
