RELAX JOHN, YOUR SUCCESSFUL RIDE IS ALMOST OVER

ROTARY TOURS NISEI VETERANS MEMORIAL CENTER

Melinda ClarkDeidre Teagarden's Mother gave a talk on her travels.

Deidre is the Director of the Nisei Veterans Memorial Center.

THE MEETING
President John opened the meeting at 12:05  & alohas were exchanged all around.  Cynthia led us in the pledge.

Margie provided inspiration by Benjamin Franklin:

“I never did a day’s work in my life that wasn’t fun!”

TODAY'S SPEAKER
Kai Pelayo

Today’s speaker was Kai Pelayo, who is the Community Affairs Manager for Monsanto.  Alvin.kaimi.pelayo@monsanto.com

Kai was born and raised here.  He joined Monsanto 2 & a half years ago after a long stint in the hotel business here in Wailea, where he said he had no life.  He just had his first New Years Eve off this past year!

Kai says rumors that Monsanto is taking over all of Maui’s land are false.  In fact, they just sold 2 of their parcels back to the county and lease them.  They grow cover crops like clover, buckwheat and mung beans in order to help maintain and improve the soil and hold it in place during high winds.  This helps to minimize the use of pesticides. Nine months of cover crops, then corn.

Also, use covered, air locked screen houses and mechanical bug-trapping devices and have interns who dump out the bugs from the trapping devices for analysis.  Anyone want to apply??

Our speaker graciously fielded many tough questions—some of them from non-Rotarians.  As of Thursday, Bayer has purchased all shares of Monsanto, so maybe he will get free Aspirin in case he has a headache.  Seriously though, he said he does not think the sale will have any effect on Maui operations of Monsanto.

He has provided us with the opportunity to tour Monsanto on Aug 23 at 9:30 am and Margie will coordinate the sign up for that.  Shoes are required.  They will provide everything else needed.
