INSPIRATION
Margie shared this Inspiration: Don’t judge each day by the harvest you reap, but by the seeds you sow.” Anonymous
INTRODUCTION OF GUESTS
ACTS OF KINDNESS

John then asked if anyone wanted to share an Act of Kindness they gave or received:

A) Margie thanked John for finding her $1 bill that fell out of her pocket slated for the Happy Dollars bowl.

B) John shared that he found a cell phone someone had left in a store, turned it in, then went outside to find a bus full of tourists waiting there. Approaching and asking them if anyone was missing a phone, he witnessed one tourist streak past him to go reclaim his cell. On returning, John finds out said tourist is a Dodger fan (the hat being a dead giveaway—the opposite of John’s affiliation). John’s reward? Dodgers get beaten by 4-1 by Giants! Wahoo!
THANK YOU CARD FROM LOKELANI MIDDLE SCHOOL INTERACT CLUB
We passed around a Thank You poster from the Interact club of Lokelani Middle School for all of Rotary’s assistance to them over the past school year. Sweet kudos to our club; thank you’s back to these remarkable middle schoolers and all their hard work.
GUEST SPEAKER

Gary Redfern introduced Colin Yamamoto, recently retired and now Battalion Chief for Ocean Safety. His talk highlighted what current & past trends are in Hawaii, re Ocean and other Water safety (streams, pools).

The stats are sobering…

• As more visitors arrive annually, more drownings occur

•  96.9% of visitors state they’ve been to beach 1 time; 49.3%, 4 times

•  Suicide is leading cause of water fatalities, Age 1-15; non-ocean drownings are second; and  third are ocean drownings.

•  75% of visitor drownings are in Maui County and Kauai; Maui averages 19 per year, but in 2018—as of today—we’re in the 20’s.

•  Stats in 2006: 15 drownings per year for 9 years.

•  Snorkeling & swimming are two areas where fatalities occur—129 on Maui, in areas with  hotels. 73% are visitors; Molokini had 9; and Ka’anapali had 21 at Black Rock.

Colin is advocating for lifeguards at Black Rock and many other ways of getting the word out regarding water/ocean safety. He got Maui’s mayor to add it into his budget, but Council took it out as it was “not being a County expense—a state expense”.

•  90% of water casualties are for persons 55+ in age; approx. 45% (according to autopsies) had heart disease, yet most fatalities occur in waist-deep water. i.e. Hanauma Bay on Oahu is a prime example—snorkelers are warned not to step on coral with their fins; if they gulp in water they panic, then take in more water, then don’t want to step on coral, and then are in full distress.

Good News: Colin is pursuing getting Safety info to the new Car Rental areas being built at airport as other attempts to get info on incoming planes hasn’t borne fruit. The quest continues.
