Elizabeth.JPG

Lokelani’s Interact Club member, Marco, shows his appreciation of a $100 donation from a generous Safeway customer.

Elizabeth models the Rescue Tube Project’s new vests the volunteers who monitor and maintain the tubes will be wearing on Maui’s South Kihei beaches.

President Joanne Doell opened the meeting at 12:01 pm

Inspiration by Kelly Trang :

  1. “Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, ambition inspired, and success achieved.”

       – Helen Keller

    2.  “I aspire to inspire before I expire.”

       – HurbungsPravinee

Hawaiian Word of the Day & Meaning:  Ho’okipa

Hospitality. the hospitality of complete giving; all guests are welcomed with spirit of aloha; you are offered food when you enter a home and offered food to take home when you leave; you may have discovered in that silver, aluminum canoe we travel through the skies in—locals take food with them and bring it back home—just as if journeying in a koa canoe to find that next island that is just over the horizon. Yup, that used-bound-with-duct-tape-box-on-the-carousel probably holds lau lau, poi to the Mainland and Trader Joe’s goodies on the way back.

End of Life Planning
IMG_6597.JPG

According to published studies, most people want to die at home. Less than 20% actually achieve this desired goal. Less than 10% of the population dies suddenly. The majority are treated and die hospitalized in the very expensive Intensive Care Units. Improved technology and medical treatments/interventions prolong life as well as the process of dying, without necessarily adding to the quality of life, but adding a very large cost to taxpayers.

On the other hand, Palliative Care has been documented to improve quality of life and the costs are ½ of those incurred in the ICU.

Providing an Advance Care Directive assists treating physicians as well as family members regarding what end of life care is wanted or not wanted.

Less than 30% of American have completed an Advance Care Directive for their family.

“Aging with Dignity” www.agingwithdignity.org  offers an advance care directive document:

“Five Wishes” that can be utilized by anyone and is legally valid in 42 States, including Hawaii.

AARP also has a similar advance care directive form available at www.aarp.org.

The Hawaii Advance Directive can be accessed at:www.CaringInfo.org/files/public/ad/hawaii.pdf
