Hawaiian Word of the Day: Laulima—many hands working together

Meaning:  Lau=many, lima=hands; Concept of Laulima=linking of arms together. And, yes, it is the name of the building next to the Swap Meet in Kahului that houses EdVenture, the non-credit side of UHMC, the Maui Language Institute and the Maui Food Innovation Center—the place newbie food biz’ can get a start, be mentored and market their businesses. Laulima can also be used to describe how a canoe crew works together for the good of all.

Today's Speaker
IMG_7283.JPG
Colin Yamamoto, led the transition of bringing lifeguards, formerly with the Ocean Safety Division of the Department of Parks and Recreation, into the Fire Department since his appointment as the first battalion chief in 2014, capping off a 30-year career in firefighting. He works regularly coordinating information exchange among Maui’s lifeguards, firefighters, and EMT first responders.

Topic:  Ocean Safety—Full Face Snorkel Masks.

Full-face masks have been made popular since 2016 and there are several companies and models available. The average number of drownings per year is 19; we're already at 23 for 8 months in 2018; there were 10 drownings in 2 weeks recently. In 2017, Colin started tracking data on drownings. He was clear that without good, factual data, we only have an “opinion” as to possible causation.

Currently, the U.S. has no national regulations regarding snorkel masks. Data was shared with the members on normal oxygen/carbon dioxide and other physical information when breathing normally when snorkeling and doing other forms of exercise.

Rotary Minute
John Moore—Rotary’s main goals regarding membership—

Participate and invite new potential members. Rotary’s different now than in previous decades. If you can’t come to weekly meetings, it’s OK, come when you can—but plan on participating in club projects at the local, state or international levels. And at all times keep on the lookout for potential members. Lead by example and let’s grow our club. There are always opportunities to be a full-on Rotarian.

Wacky Day Name (or Wacky Week)

8/15 is National Relaxation day—breeeeaaaathe! Have a glass of wine, watch a movie, get a foot massage, take some time today to fully relax—and that goes for our members off island as well!

And it is Resurrect Romance Week—So for all those Romantics out there—this is your week—do something romantic for your favorite person!!!

Meeting ended at 1:07 p.m.
