Laura Berthold was introduced to us by Margie Flores.  She represents the Maui Forest Bird Recovery project.  Laura gave us a good overview of the different birds that live in the higher elevations, their threats, and what the project is doing to keep the birds on our island.  Threats include climate change, predators, disease and habitat destruction.  Each item is being addressed to keep healthy birds here on Maui.

Threats include climate change, predators, disease and habitat destruction. Habitat destruction happens frequently due to ‘hooved-critters’ (goats, cows, etc) who eat away the native plants, shrubs, trees. When wired fences go up, these animals can be rounded up and removed, native plants reintroduced and the ecology of the area restored. See the before and after photos that were shown in the slideshow as evidence of a successful restoration.

MAGIC MARBLEDave Ballaine was in charge this week.  The pot is worth $269, with 30 marbles.  Mark Barry drew a blue marble.  Sorry, Mark!
Another whimsical, wacky day…Today was national ‘Wear Something Gaudy Day’. Joanne pulled on a fluffy, intertwined boa made of Christmas Red, Sparkly-Teal and a dab of tiger print as an example of a social unacceptable “Gaudy” bit of apparel.

Meeting ended at 1 PM with a Mahalo nui loa.  Stuart Karlan led us in song to thank visitors for joining us today.
