John Buck

Margie Flores gave the floor to our speaker, John Buck, who came to Maui in 1978 from California. His Dad was a policeman in the San Jose police department. John attended Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo and graduated with a degree in Physical Education. His present job is as Deputy Director of the Maui County Department of Transportation. His job does not include anything to do with roads, paving or streetlights. His department mission is to oversee and support transportation in the county including the Air Ambulance. His department runs a 22 million dollar budget with a staff of six; three are appointed. They run seven days a week from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. There are 200 employees and 150 buses. Passengers average 6,000 a day with 200 designated fixed stops. There are also para-transit stops for disabled passengers who live within 3/4 mile of the fixed routes. There are future plans for the department to include expanded routes and electrifying the bus system. Work is being done with the Hotels in Wailea to encourage their employees to commute by bus, save money and free up much needed parking. John has been on island for forty years and is very happy to see the new high school under construction. It was in the plans when he moved here—1986! For routes and schedules, go online at mauicounty.gov/bus or public.transit@mauicounty.gov/bus, 808-871-4838.
Happy Dollars:  Smita Martinez passed the koa bowl. Among the happy were Cynthia Clark—happy to be back with us after losing 20 pounds and having stents inserted in her kidneys. Karin Carlson happy for our fundraiser and sad for all the friends she has in Paradise, California. Jay Satenstein, John Moore, Jason Denhart happy to be here with us for two weeks, Margie Flores happy to have our speaker today, Charlotte George Smith happy to be warm, Gary Redfern happy so see Jason, Stuart Karlan happy to announce an upcoming holiday concert at the MACC the evening of November 25 and Joanne Doell happy to see the stunningly green West Maui Mountains!
Magic Marble: Kit Hawkins told us the pot value is $324 with 34 blue marbles in the bag and one gold. John Buck picked the coupon, 5002 and Karin Carlson pulled a blue marble. Maybe next time!
