InspirationJoanne Doell shared this: “Happiness is a perfume you cannot pour on others without getting a few drops on yourself.”  – Ralph Waldo Emerson

Hawaiian word of the day: Pilina:  Relationship, connection, Association.  To have a strong pilina within your family, co-workers or community allows you to achieve amazing results together.

The Maui Minute

Rotarian Redux
Our newest member, Barry Rosenfeld’s mini-bio:  He’s been a Rotarian since 1985, 33 years as a Rotarian, and has worked for John Hancock and estate business planning.  He now works part time for select people who still need his services.  He’s been married to Pat since 1983.  He is definitely into service projects.  For the last 5 years he’s worked on the board producing a Rotary International float in the Rose Bowl parade.

Rotary Foundation (RF)
Barry Hyman is still collecting from our club money for RF.  He listed a wide variety of projects worldwide and local projects RF is involved with our club; and the global grants our club is responsible for:  vision in Delhi, India, Pediatric training in Africa, and water sanitation.  We as Rotarians are asked to give $100 each year to become a sustaining member.  A Rotarian becomes a Paul Harris fellow after donating $1,000 to the Rotary Foundation.  Joanne Doell has done that twice now and received her Paul Harris +1 pin today.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Gary Redfern told the club he is working with the Lahaina clubs to install rescue tubes in West Maui.  Maintenance of our already installed tubes is an issue.  Gary asked for more of us to volunteer for maintenance and installation. To help, contact him at garyredfern1@gmail.com.

Karin Carlson:  Our fundraiser will be on February 16, 2019 at Mulligans.  The band Kaina Kountry will rock for Rotary and Kathy Collins will be our emcee. We will have an online Silent Auction at 32auctions.com/rckw2019.  It should go live on the web on about January 15th. Bids will also be made online  at the event itself, and the software will automatically let us know who the winners are. Joanne recommended that each member should start now to gather at least 2 auction items.

Paige Fontaine: is in charge of the auction at the event.  She asked for volunteers to help set up as well solicit donations and help gather them prior to the event.

Joanne added that each member should start now to contact family and friends so you and they can reserve February 16, 2019 for a fun evening of music, dance, and talk story with Tita (Kathy Collins). And to gather at least 2 auction items. Since the majority of our auction items will be online (we’ll also have many items in our auction tents), let’s gather as many items initially as possible with the idea that we may have to continue to add items as we get closer to the fundraiser. The auction committee will show us how to download the auction app and start bidding.

Jay Satenstein  is the ticket manager this year.  Tickets will be for sale online and at our meetings for  $85 each, or $850 for a reserved table of 10.

There will be an envelope stuffing for the auction item solicitation and sponsorship invitation letters at Karin Carlson’s this Saturday at 3.  Information will be sent out Monday for sponsors.

Margie Flores said she has bought gifts for 33 children for her project Christmas Angels.  Delivery will be between December 14 – 18th.

Joanne Doell told us about the November 30th Meet and Greet gathering. 15 people attended and had an evening of great fun and fellowship. 4 newcomers indicated they wanted to join our club. Recruitment continues.

The Food Drive was held on December 1st at the Piikea Shopping Center Safeway.  Club members and Kihei Charter School Interact members collected $2,742 for the Maui Food Bank as well as 1,149 pounds of food, making that a record for collections on a single day.

December 6th – Holiday Rotary party will be held at the Moksnes residence, 6 to 8 PM.

December 10th -  member Tom Blackburn Rodriguez announced Family Friendly Christmas, readings of “A Child’s Christmas in Wales” and Truman Capote's A Christmas Memory for free at 6:15 at the Iao Theatre.  Just bring donations of unwrapped toys for older children that will go to the kids at the Children's Justice Center.

Today's Speaker
Barry Rosenfeld

Barry Rosenfeld spoke of his involvement with the annual Rotary float in the Tournament of Roses parade held in Pasadena, CA before the Rose Bowl football game.  Though Rotary International does not support the float monetarily, they receive mega PR points for all the good work Rotary does around the world from the parade attendees.  Along with local Interact and Rotaract members Rotarians put in over 6,000 hours for each float.  Cost of each float is $200,000, all monies donated.  Three times in the last 5 years the Rotary float has won the Princess award.  The next float, on January 1, 2019 has the theme “Service Rocks” and has a crocodile on it.
