DR. MARK BARRY reported on the progress he and Kelly have made in training surgeons in orthopedic surgery in Africa, mainly in Tanzania.  The aim is to set up an effective and sustainable program that will carry on after the training; not “parachuting into rescue, but training local physicians and other supporting staff”.  With the help of a Rotary Int’l grant for $35,000, they were able to bring trainers from the USA and Europe to Africa for 1 ½ years of intense training.  The monies paid for airfare, lodging, food.  Mark showed us pictures of different health issues (among them—club foot, scoliosis, hip issues, leg infections) they were able to correct.  Plans are to continue in other African countries with the same training.

Today's Speaker
Sarah Sorensen

Sarah Sorensen, a realtor from the Whale’s Tail Realty in Wailuku, HI talked to us about the Wishing Well program.  Under the umbrella there are two components to this project.  One is scholarships to Maui County students.  The other is a program to supply needed items to teachers in the classrooms of Maui County.  Fifty two percent of all students in Maui County are economically disadvantaged.  That means about 12,000 students might not have money for pencils, paper, and other supplies needed—especially for the second semester of school.  More can be read about this program at www.ILoveMauiSchools.com.   Watch her video at realtorm.ag/Sorenson.  Items needed may range from shoes, area rugs, microwave ovens, coolers, stools, office chairs, floor fans, yoga balls, in addition to the traditional school supplies.  The list is endless.  A generic list is available to teachers, on which they can order what is most needed for their individual classroom.
HAPPY DOLLARS:  Smita Martinez carried around the koa bowl asking for ‘happy’ comments.  Several were happy Sarah Sorenson shared her story.  Steve Moksnes shared he and Billie are sponsoring a ‘library’ in Afghanistan, Jay Satenstein congratulated Mark H on his new ‘pin’, and Margie Flores shared she saw a big article on the Christmas Angels project in the newsletter for St. Theresa’s parish in Kihei.
BIRTHDAYS/CLUB ANNIVERSARIES:  Birthdays - Billie Moksnes, 15th, Janet Walker, 20th, and Michael O’Dwyer, 25th.  Anniversaries:  Dave and Heather Ballaine 10 years on Feb 11th, Paige Fontaine and Billie Moksnes 18 years on Feb 20th, Dick Lundrup 4 years Feb 25th, and Steve Moksnes 18 years Feb 27th.  All were given fortune cookies to celebrate the new lunar Chinese New Year.
ACT OF KINDNESS:  Kathleen Tezak gave away a cook top she no longer could use to a neighbor who needed one—and it fit perfectly.

MAGIC MARBLE:  Dave Ballaine managed the drawing.  Karin Carlson drew a blue marble.  In the pot this week is $541. Perhaps the lucky winner will pull the gold marble next week!

Flag Exchange: Doug and Mary Cooper from Crossville, Tennessee, exchanged flags with President Joanne
National Chopsticks Day today!  Joanne encouraged all to practice their Chopsticks’ skills or teach someone how to use them (only the top one moves). Also, It is National Black History Month in February. Joanne thanked the Media in general for educating all on the contributions made by 19th and 20th Century Black Americans with stories that may not have been in our school history chapters when we were younger.
