Paula, the President of Cup of Cold Water, spoke to us about the organization and what it does for the needy on Maui.  A van carrying the group’s name is filled with food, water, clothing, and simple first aid items that can be distributed.  Each week this van with volunteers goes out on 3 mornings on the weekend.  One morning it is the Lahaina area, the next is Kahului area, and the third is the Kihei area.  Items are either donated or bought from Costco through donations.  This project is run by the Episcopal churches of Maui with the help of several other organizations—churches and non-religious groups.  In summary their 2018 Revenues were approximately $67,000, serving about 9,000 people from the Cup of Cold Water mobile service van. New Member
Judy Gray

Judy was inducted by District Governor Win Schoneman with sponsor Mark Harbison.
Judy was a member, along with several of our current members, of the Rotary Club of Kihei-Sunrise which met at the 5 Palms Restaurant in Kihei. She will give a short talk about herself and her Rotary journey under our, Rotarian Redux, section of our meeting on Wednesday, March 6, 2019.
HAPPY DOLLARS:  Barry Rosenfeld passed around the koa bowl looking for happy people.  Many were happy the fundraiser was such a success.  Several expressed congratulations to Judy Gray on her new membership with us.  (We are the lucky ones!)  Bless Young was happy to be here for a couple of weeks.  Charlotte Smith was happy her cat didn’t need to go outside yesterday with all the rain we had.

MAGIC MARBLE:  The Pot was worth $499 and had 1 gold and 26 blue marbles.  A guest drew a blue marble, so on to the next meeting.  We have another chance!
Today's Second Speaker
District Governor Win Schoneman
IMG_0414c.jpg

Our esteemed District Governor Win Schoneman from Honolulu spoke.  He gave us a short version of his background as farmer, navy electrical engineer on submarines for 21 years, and the proud owner of Bubbies Ice Cream & Dessert Shop in Hawaii Kai at the Koko Marina Center for 23 years.  He was so inspired 5 years ago when visiting Romania as a volunteer Rotarian helping with the cleft palate surgeries that he wanted to come back and put more effort into being a Rotarian.  He was also inspired by a Rotary Peace conference on human trafficking in CA.

He feels the clubs in Hawaii are strong.  Membership fluctuates some but is generally quite steady.  Barry Rosenfeld asked about the 2020 International Convention in Hawaii, June 1–4.  At this point there isn't any work for our club to do to help but keep an eye out for volunteer opportunities.  Also watch for more information on the District Conference in Honolulu this year May 17–19.  Peace will be the theme, and it will be presented in a TED Talk format with an opportunity to choose between many excellent speaker presentations on Saturday.

Because 30,000 visitors from around the world are expected, the Hawaiian Hilton Village will serve as a satellite convention site for the overflow from the main Convention Center of approximately 5,000 attendees.

Win is also working on establishing "issue-responsive" Rotary Clubs, which take on a singular issue for maximum impact.  The first one will be an Environmental Rotary Club, with a target membership, not of current Rotarians, but of former Rotarians and interested community members.

Leaving with Aloha: Members and visitors congratulated our newest member, Judy Gray, as they exited the meeting.

The meeting was adjourned at 1:17 p.m.
