Wailea, Maui
Today's Meeting
The meeting opened at noon by our past-President John Moore. Aloha was passed around with hugs, handshakes and fist bumps. The pledge to our flag was led by Kit Hawkins.
New member, Jack Brouillard, shared the inspiration. He quoted his 5th-grade teacher, Mrs. Birch, who said, “Nothing of value comes without effort.’’
Rotary Foundation: Barry Hyman shared a description of the Paul Harris Fellow and history. The Foundation is funded solely by members and other donors. Often donations were to honor others. Sustaining membership is $100/year and for our club to annually qualify as an "EYEY" club (Every Rotarian Every year), each member must have donated at least $25 that year. There's also a Matching Point system – once you have donated $1000, every additional $1 you donate goes to generate matching points, which can then be given to other club members toward their Paul Harris Fellowship award. A Paul Harris Plus 1 award was given to honor Heather Ballaine today because of all her work in the club. She is an expert seamstress and recently sewed 167 flags for the rescue tube stands for our club and three other Maui Rotary clubs, made a quilt given to Kit Hawkins honoring his presidency a couple of years ago, expanded our canvas cabinet cover, and manages the list of weekly meeting volunteers regardless of whether she's on Maui or at her Bainbridge Island summer home.
Heather adds her seamstress capabilities and volunteer time to offering to make up all the Flags for our 4 Clubs—even to the point of sewing them from her Washington state home. She and Dave return there on April 26th. Heather will have 167 completed before departure. And finally, l briefly touched on her other acts of service/kindness to our club and members over the years.
Announcements
Gary Redfern told us about Heather’s involvement in the rescue tube flags and about the 40 tubes installed in South Maui, with 15 more installed by the hotels in Wailea in conjunction with the our club. He recently spent a lot of time working with the 3 Lahaina Clubs installing 20 more, and they will be installing an additional 20 in the next couple of weeks. Gary made a plea for more volunteers to help the twice-a-month tube and stand inspections and maintenance. Kit Hawkins, Jay Satenstein, and Elisa Rummel volunteered. How about you, too? It's a good excuse for a walk on the beach. Gary agreed to send an email to remind members about this opportunity. Thanks to Gary for his devotion to this task!

Stuart Karlan showed us our website home page that now has a link to the online version of the Rotarian Magazine, and the list of duties for the upcoming meeting, in addition to upcoming speakers and events.
Guests: Al Cieri from Kihei, Dale Presson, Monterey Bay, CA, Mark Ambrose, Calgary South, Mike Marshall, Kihei and Alan Gray, Chicago, IL
Today's Speaker
Elizabeth Johnson spoke to us about “Non-Traditional Children’s Learning”. She is a Harvard psychology graduate who grew up on Maui and learned the hard way how to succeed at Harvard. Through traveling throughout the world her three boys had trouble adjusting to schools wherever they lived. Each needed individual learning experiences. She became a Hollywood animal trainer, and life coach and educational consultant . She watched through the years how frustrating some students became because the pressure of being a student didn’t fit the style of learning each student had. Ms. Johnson has learned that teachers and parents both need to discover the learning styles of each student, their special interests, and how best to assist them as they move through different subjects and assignment challenges.
She can be reached at newedgeacademy.com.
Acts of Kindness: Heather Ballaine told us about a neighbor who was able to help them with a light fixture that took 2 hours to fix. Margie Flores told us that Steve Moksnes gave his soup to her today at the meeting! Someone else thanked Margie for setting up all the club tours we’ve had this winter.

Hali’imaile Pinapple Plantation Field Trip
Best Tour Evah!—2 hours of information and new experiences; Rudy, the manager of the farm, was the facilitator/guide. New irrigation systems are coming into place using the nearby stream to replace the system of plastic irrigation that has permeated the fields. Got to taste the fruit right off the plant and learned pineapples don’t ripen once they’re picked. In the warehouse, the fruit is given two washes in water and then given a thin waxy coating to preserve them (like that added to apples).
About a year ago, the LeVecke family, owners of Hali’imaile Distilling Company and their PAU Maui Vodka business (the only vodka in the world made from pineapples) bought out the Maui Gold pineapple company, keeping this agricultural enterprise local on Maui. 500 acres will soon be all planted in pineapples. One pineapple is harvested after 18 months with a few plants producing a 2nd fruit after another 14 months. We can’t compete with the low prices in other parts of the world, but can celebrate our continuing use of our fields for local produce. Buy Maui Gold Pineapples! Past-President John thanked Margie Flores for setting up the pineapple field tour that 30 people enjoyed last week.
Happy Dollars: Several had guests in March who had just left. Several thanked Heather for her involvement in the club. Several thanked Margie for her work in the club. Dennis Bagshaw says his wife Rema is healing after knee surgery. Smita Martinez was happy to announce she has a job at the Kihei Charter school.
Magic Marble: Joe Mitchell was in charge. $592 has been raised for the pot. Smita Martinez drew a blue marble, so we go on to next week.
Closing the Meeting
All were thanked for coming with song led by Stuart Karlan.
