Hawaiian word:  Ma’alaea – means red ocher color, as in the earth of rejuvenation; ma=next to-next to the medicinal red dirt.  Used to be a stream that ran down to Ma’alaea and the red dirt would collect in the stream.  My story (says Joanne): gargle with ‘red dirt-salt’ dissolved in hot water at first sign of a sore throat; every few hours for 2 days-the cold doesn’t materialize; TU Gramma!  Also, 1793 Capt. George Vancouver brings first cattle and ‘root vegetables’ to Maui to Ma’alaea Bay.  And this was the area of the first airport on Maui in 1929-38—dirt too wet to land; Pu’unene later, and later still the present location.
Favorite Maui minute from our guest Nko Mutangana::  She was so impressed with how green our Maui, beautiful mountains, clouds, etc.

Rotarian Redux-Mini-Bio: Barry Hyman

Barry, who went surfing with his son, Josh, at 5:30 this morning, shared this bio:

In 1958 I was born on a farm in Iowa, a small boy with no hair.
Not much has changed in 60 years. My family moved out west to
LA before I was a year old. I attended schools in Orange County, then moved to the San Francisco Bay Area where where I attended 2 more High Schools, then UC Berkeley where I graduated with a BS in Electrical Engineering in 1981.

My college years were a bit unusual--after struggling at Berkeley for 2 years I took a semester off and went on a surf safari in Mexico with my best friend in a $500 VW van for 3 months.  Our stops? Baja peninsula, across to Puerto Vallarta on mainland Mexico and on to the famous Mexican Pipeline to surf, coming back thru Mazatlan to La Paz and back to Ensenada on Christmas Eve to be met by rare snow in San Diego and LAX.

When I returned I had a very different perspective on life and a purpose to complete my education. With the motivation I was lacking previously, studying upper level Electrical Engineering and Economics courses was much more relevant . After completing college in just under 5 years (a recurring number in my life): worked as an EE in Silicon Valley for just under 5 years then embarked on another surf trip—around the world—14 months, 22 countries, 5 continents (N.A., S.A., Australia, Asia, Europe). Fav surf destinations included Oahu, Fiji, Indonesia, New Zealand, Australia and a freezing cold Atlantic Ocean snow-melt river mouth in Spain.

Next job after trip? An international electronics consulting and trading firm; territory was SE Asia—traveling there every 6-8 weeks.

In 1989, on my return, I stopped in Hawaii for a few days on R&R (i.e. Surf) including  a one-week stay on Maui. Mesmerized by Maui, I told the president of my company we had 6 months to find and train a replacement for me as I was going to move to Maui for the rest of my life. (Yes, just shy of 5 years on that job.)

In October 1990, took my belongings and moved to the home I bought in Paia. Discovered I was more fanatical about investing and investment research than engineering.  So I went to work for Dean Witter as a stock broker. They sent me to the World Trade Center in NYC for a month of training in April 1992, where I met a cute Filipina out with her Cornell Sorority sisters celebrating her management training course. We were pen pals for months when I convinced her to come visit me in Maui—rest is history—she married me in November, 1995—2 children; Kiana, a freshman at ASU whose last final exam is today, and Josh who is in 7th grade at Seabury.

After 5 years at Dean Witter, I opened FIM Group’s Fee-only Wealth Management Maui office in 1997 now there for 22+ years—and recently acquired by Mercer Advisors. I joined RCKW in 1992 so at some point this year I will have been a member of this club for 27 years.
