Wailea, Maui

Head shot.jpg
E komo mai!  Welcome, thank you for joining us today on our beautiful aina—this land we know as Maui no ka oi!
Hawaiian Word of the Day: Oluwalu “Many hills”
Four miles south of  Lahaina; a Pu’u Honua (a place of refuge); a ‘Mother reef’—coral spawn spreads to other islands.

Oluwalu was the sight of a Massacre of Hawaiian people in 1790. After several squabbles for many reasons, an American named Simon Metcalfe who was in command of the small fur trading brig, Eleanora, ordered the brutal murder of more than a hundred Hawaiians there. It is sometimes called the Hawaiian “Wounded Knee” incident.

Joanne introduced Beth Mathias, a Maui Resident of 40+ years and Director of Marketing for Pacific BioDiesel for 9 years who gave us information about sustainable farming operations on three islands, recycling programs, cooking oil, and other products.

Founded on Maui in 1995, Pacific Biodiesel is the nation’s longest operating and most experienced biodiesel producer, and established the first retail biodiesel pump in America. Today with more than 100 employees statewide, the company is the only commercial producer of liquid biofuels in Hawaii.

Summary: Their new Hilo plant produces the highest quality biodiesel (biodegradable). Production is at 5.5 million gallons per year. Recently, Pacific Biodiesel became the first state-licensed industrial hemp farm on Maui. On Earth Day, 4/22/19, Founders Bob and Kelly King announced the development of Maui’s first state-licensed industrial hemp farm, in Central Maui to be the first industrial hemp farm in the U.S. powered 100% by biodiesel. This operation will initially produce full-spectrum industrial hemp extract, including CBD and marketed to cosmetic manufacturers; to be featured as an ingredient in BioDiesel’s natural skincare brand, Kuleana. Thank all the members who helped out today—Who? Gary, Barry, Judy, Jay & Kathy, Dennis, Paige, Mark and others.

Reminder to all: Watch and listen and be prepared to do an Act of Kindness to someone in your world in 2019.
In the World of Wacky and Unusual Commemoration Days:  today, May 15, is National Chocolate Chip Day, and May 13th is Frog Jumping Day, commemorated by Mark Twain in a short story and enjoyed by those attending the Competition since 1929 in Angel’s Camp, CA; keep ‘em chilled until they’re dropped onto a green circle (the lily pad) then scare them into leaping—3 hops in a straight line (hopefully).
Meeting ended at 1:04 p.m.
