Greeting from President Joanne
E komo mai!  Welcome, one and all to our new Rotary year which will be more successful than last—and to Maui-- our beautiful aina—our  Maui no ka oi!
Inspiration: Barry
Two great lines from The Little Prince:
“It is much more difficult to judge oneself than others.”
“All grown-ups were once children.”
Hawaiian Word of the Day:  Kāʻanapali is a census-designated, master-planned town place in Maui. It is located in the ahupua’a of Hanakao`o, meaning “hard work” (of the digger).
Maui Minute—ask one visitor for their favorite Maui memory—a place, an event, an activity or a quick, short story? Today: Frank Szcepanski, visitor from Valparaiso, Indiana Club,  and is currently sleeping on an air mattress while looking for a 3-bedroom place. He is moving to Maui and very, very happy this is happening!.
Guests
Frank Szcepanski, Kihei
Justin Yanagida, our speaker
Allyn Kalaiwao, Justins colleague

Announcements:

  • Demotion’ & Ascension Party. Big Mahalo from Joanne to all who came to our party on Saturday. The feather hair ornament you gave me is superb!

  • Induction of new Board members and Presidents will be held on July 11 at 6:00 p.m.  Joanne emailed the latest info to club members and she has a head count of 9. Let her know if anyone else can come. Please send an email with a list of  anything you would like to donate to the silent auction they're holding and its market price to Carly at carlyheims@gmail.com.  By Monday we can get the silent auction bid forms setup and put them in the program for our Thursday event.

  • Your Meeting Duties: Please let Heather Ballaine know the dates when you will not be at our meetings so she can schedule you for meeting duties instead of trying to get a sub at the last minute. hballaine@gmail.com

  • Club field trip to Keālia Pond scheduled for August 28, 9:30 a.m.. Sign up at a in binder.

  • Scholarships: Each year we give a $5000 Hawaii Rotary Youth Foundation (HRYF) scholarship, a donation to Dental Hygienists at UHMC, and a $2,500 Merit Scholarship to a Kihei Youth Center (KYC) student. They are all designed as competitions to find the most qualified student based on their presence, accomplishments and potential future success, and we usually have several students from which to choose. However, this year KYC has only one applicant, and we haven’t been able to have a competition, so Joanne asked the membership here and off island if you wish to consider this student for a scholarship toward his college tuition. I can accept checks made out to our club today and next week. I’ll see that they get to the college, UHMC.

  • 2020 Rotary International Convention in Hawaii: Paige said she’d be in touch with members regarding volunteering as we get closer to the June 6-10, 2020 International Convention on Oahu.

Mark Barry spoke to us about his work in Africa teaching doctors how to do spinal surgeries to correct life threatening scoliosis and cranio-facial surgeries such as for cleft palate or lip clefts so that they will be able to pass the proper tests and gain confidence in doing these surgeries on their own. It is a rewarding endeavor and Mark Harbison was given thanks for negotiating $70,000 worth of contributions to these good works from our sister clubs in Japan and other Japanese clubs.
Dr. Mark also told us that he will be moving to San Diego soon, Diego, but will be returning to Maui in September after Africa trip. Kelly has also moved to California to continue her teaching career. We wish Mark and Kelly the best. They have been extremely valuable members of our club and will be sorely missed.
Awards
President Joanne presented the Rotary Spirit Award to Dr. Mark, Smita and Mark H.
Today's Speaker
Justin Yanagida, Fighting sickness with fitness

Justin is a Nationally Certified Fitness Professional with a mission to provide the best results and create healthy habits that will endure a lifetime.

He was born and raised on Maui, and growing up, battled with being overweight. When his doctor informed him that he was classified in an unhealthy BMI (body mass index) range, he  looked for ways to lose weight and tried all kinds of fad diets, liquid diets, cabbage soup diets, one-meal-a-day diets. Nothing worked until he got involved with sports where began to learn how to eat and exercise properly. He eventually fell in love with fitness, eating right, and sharing his story to others. He traveled to the National Personal Training Institute in Orlando, Florida for training in program design, nutrition, anatomy, physiology, functional movement screening, pre/post rehabilitation, special populations, diabetic studies, and working with seniors and youth and became certified with bone density training in senior population, and sports performance.

To ensure that his trainees have the best results, it is a daily habit of his to spend at least an hour each day to educate himself even further because he believes that there is no ceiling to the vast knowledge out there.

Justin's presentation was in the motivational style of his mentors, Tony Robbins and Jim Rohn. To help us focus, he asked us to close our eyes, put our hands over our heart and feel our heart beating.

Justin's talk and slides focused on these topics:
  • Self Care, Impact, Empower
  • Giving & Receiving
Justin asked members pair up and trade a brief shoulder massage to show the value of both giving and receiving.
  • Schedule Time For Yourself
  • No One Ever Regrets feeling joy and happiness, having more energy and vitality, higher level of awareness and knowledge.
  • Mind, body and spirit
  • Practice intention
  • "Learning the art of expressing gratitude will force you to focus on the positive." – Jim Rohn
  • "Darkness cannot drive out darkness.
    Only light can do that.
    Hate cannot drive out hate.
Only Love can do that." – Martin Luther King, Jr.
  • Be the Light
Justin also gave us copies of his book.
You can also visit his website, watch many fitness tips videos, and learn about his
studio in Wailuku

In the World of Wacky and Unusual Commemoration Days:   “Stay out of the Sun Day”—always good advice on Maui especially around this time of the day. And if you don’t like that one, it’s also Disobedience Day—Rotarians are always doing what is Pono, but today’s the day to do a little bit of disobedience—even if it is only to leave the dirty dishes in the sink or don’t take out the garbage!
Closing the Meeting

These were the words of Barry Flanagan of Hapa on Saturday night: “Just keep loving life on Maui, ‘cuz you ARE the example!”

Stu sang us out the door and …

Mahalo nui loa--Thank you very much  and a hui hou! --until we meet again.
