President Joanne: E komo mai!  Welcome, one and all to our new Rotary year which will be more successful than last—and to Maui-- our beautiful aina—our  Maui no ka oi!
Pledge of Allegiance by: Wendy Hornack

Inspiration by: Barry: One of the best ways we can honor those we love that have gone before us is to let go. God saw your loved one getting tired, wrapped His arms around them and said: "come to Me".

Hawaiian Word of the Day:  Kāʻanapali is a census-designated, master-planned town place in Maui. It is located in the ahupua’a of Hanakao`o, meaning “hard work” (of the digger).

Introduction of Guests:

  • Lance, Charlotte's neighbor.

  • Joe McDermott a Rotarian who recently moved back to Maui with wife Alice, a returning club member. Joe will also join our club.

  • Kidder Mathews: Real Estate Solutions, Maui

  • Wendy Hornack & Nephew from the Upcountry Rotary Club.

  • Zach Allinger – guest of Wendy Hornack: Kihei – Allstate Insurance Co

  • Lehuanani Huddleston-Hafoka our speaker, the Director of the Kihei Youth Center

  • Stephanie: Admin Assistant of the Kihei Youth Center

  • Carolyn Hinrichs– guest of Joanne Doell from Walnut Creek, CA

Maui minute—Today: Carolyn Hinrichs, President Joanne’s friend, recalled the fond memory she has of ABC stores as her daughter called her from one on Maui to announce Carolyn was to become a grandmother!

Kihei Youth Center

Lehua grew up in here and has been with the the Kihei Youth Center (KYC) for 16 years.  She is a past member of our club and thanked the us for all that we have done for the the youth center.

KYC is  place of learning and refuge for the youth of Kihei.

As part of their orientation, the kids learn the “house rules,” along with behavior expectations, which include the center’s ABCs: a positive Attitude, Behavior and Character. Lehua and her staff also impart the Hawaiian value of kahiau (selfless generosity), along with the values of honesty, loyalty, integrity and respect. “Our primary service is a drop-in center, but when the kids are here, we teach them life skills and focus on leadership and character development. We also encourage them to just enjoy being a kid.”*

“We make time to talk and listen to the kids, because we believe they can do great things,”she said. “Our goal is to set them on the course of life so they are good people. That’s something that will benefit all of us.”*

For many of the children, this may be the only stable place in their lives. The staff knows that people learn from their mistakes and reminds parents and others that “they were also young once”.

KYC shirts have the following printed on the back -  “‘A‘ohe hana nui ke alu ‘ia.”
"No task is too big when done together by all" a quote from a
‘Ōlelo No‘eau, a longer poem by Mary Kawena Pukui. (Click here to see the full poem.)

Note: we will have our annual club booth at KYC's Maui Youth Day Fair on October 12.

In the World of Wacky and Unusual Commemoration Days:   National Pina Colada Day  and if you don’t want to drink that day, I believe Jelly Bellies has a Pina Colada Jellybean to munch on!!!
One last thought from President Joanne… I encourage all members to get to know one another not as Rotarians, but as true friends by sharing invitations to our homes, to our celebrations, or to just have a cup of coffee or tea or a glass of wine at the end of the day. Please consider this as we move into our Summer and Fall. Be thinking who you can invite to our Pau Hana—Wed, July 31st
Closing the Meeting
