Today's Meeting

President Joanne opened the meeting at noon.
Hawaiian Word of the Day:  Mauna Kahalawai…loosely translated to mean “All of the Maui mountains”. The West Maui Mountains were formed from one large volcano and are now split apart into craggy ridges/gullies.

Introduction of Guests:  George Dunbar is a recurring guest who comes from Perth, in Western Australia.

Allan Weiland has been to our Club meetings before.  He now lives here so he filled out an application seeking membership in our club.

Maui Minute:  Al Weiland’s favorite Maui Memory was from a trip he and his wife made to the island years ago.  They were looking for people to meet and things to do.  They found a gal named Joanne who conducted Yoga classes at Keawakapu Beach.  They used “noodles” for buoyancy.  When you fell off of your noodle, you could hear the whales singing under the sea, and got to know the local jelly fish….he must have gotten stung.

Announcements:

Our School Supply Drive is September 21st at Safeway. Please check the binder and make sure you are at Safeway a few minutes before your shift, and stay until the end of your shift. If you cannot attend at the last minute—please find another member to be there in your place. We will only have one of the ‘doors’ and Lokelani’s Interact students will be assisting us.

Our Contributions: When Joanne asked teachers what they need, they replied: Liquid glue and glue sticks, planners, lined paper, 30 computer mice, pencils, pencil sharpener, HP61 ink, white board erasers, hole puncher, large paper clips, tape dispenser, skinny sharpies, copy paper, pencils, electric sharpener, colored pencils, markers, sharpies. Elizabeth and Gary can receive any of your contributions over this next weekend as they have some plastic tubs in which to store items. Best to take it to their home, 59 Nohokai Street, not to our table at Safeway on Saturday. "Thank you in advance for your generousness." —Joanne

September Pau Hana is scheduled for Wednesday, the 25th.  We will be setting up at the North end of Kamaole III, under and/or near the large shaded area.  Bring a chair, pupus to share, your favorite beverage, and your best Maui smile.  It is a great time to socialize, talk story, and introduce folks who may be interested in joining Rotary.  “Bring a Friend!”

Board meetings will be split--on Friday, 9/13 and Thursday, September 26th, at 4 o’clock.  It will be at Joanne’s place.

Today's Speaker
Frank Szczepanski
20190911_121730_HDR.jpg

Frank started with the toxic water that was being used for drinking in the East Chicago, Indiana area.  Lots of toxins from the steel mills and other manufacturing businesses were being dumped into Lake Michigan. Frank began seeing and hearing about people being diagnosed with cancer, and heart and lung problems.  He felt the need to start investigating the toxic water problem.   Check out the YouTube videos, “East Chicago Young Turks”.  They are an organization that has tried to bring the water problems of East Chicago to the news front.  They proclaim that East Chicago, Indiana could soon be the next Flint, Michigan.  Flint’s water is undrinkable.

Frank and Peter Englebert got together and started taking samples of the water in and around East Chicago, had them tested, and found many toxins that were over EPA limits.  For instance, the EPA STD for lead is 400 parts per million, and the samples they took found 33,000 ppm.  And they have found through research and personal events, that even small amounts of toxins can cause problems over a long period of time.

Chromium is another chemical that can be found in water samples.  It gets into the water when companies who make and or use these chemicals do not dispose of them correctly.  If water is not monitored often, the chemicals can reach toxic levels very quickly.

Most of the transmission pipes in older water systems are made of lead.  As they deteriorate, the pipes break down, and the lead gets in the water.  The public has no idea.

The “Clean Water Act of 1974” only listed two chemicals that should be monitored due to their toxicity.  There are actually12 to 15.

The bottom line is that we all should be more conscious of what is in the water we drink.  We should also be concerned about what others are dumping in to our water supplies here on Maui and around the world.
