“Fear is the cheapest room in the house.  I would like to see you living in better conditions.”  Hafiz

Hawaiian Word of the Day:  (Local Places) Giggle Hill (Kalakupua Park) opened in Ha’iku November 18, 1918.  Camp Maui in Ha’iku (housing 20,000 U.S. Marines) was the main base of the 4th Marine Division in WWII.  At least 18 regiments, battalions, were stationed there including “War dogs, Tank and Signal Corps, and Artillery”.

Nicknamed “Giggle Hill” because American soldiers training there would meet their girls in secret at night, and sometimes their girl’s giggles could be heard coming from autos at night.  The terrain and beaches of Maui provided excellent and rugged training grounds for the Marines.

Introduction of Guests:

Christopher McGee: Just checking out the Club

         Harry Hellison: Yakima, Washington

         Randi Wagner: Maui(Speaker)

Stefan Landvott: Germany, now Kirkland, Washington

Maui Minute:   Stefan shared that his family have loved coming to Maui and playing in  the ocean and enjoying Maui’s beauty.

Announcements:

  • David Ballaine will undergo a medical procedure on his heart on Nov. 12 and we all send him our best wishes and support to him and Heather.  They anticipate returning to Maui in January; a card was passed around for all to sign for Heather & David.

  • Our “Small Change for Big Changes” Polio Plus fund drive grossed $208.35.  Our own Lokelani Intermediate School’s Interact Club counted the donations.

  • Background check forms which are expiring between now and December are due.  Please give the completed forms to Al Weiland.  New background checks will be good for 2 years.  This is for reassurance for members who work with youth.  Joanne has a few extra hard copies.  All completed forms need to be turned in to Al by November 20th.

  • Billie Moksnes agreed to be the Club Secretary until Sally Dean returns to Maui in February.  Sally continues to do a few tasks for us while she is home in Nova Scotia.

  • Dennis announced that there would be no Pau Hanas in November or December due to the Holidays.

  • Dictionary Distribution Margie reported that the club presented about 275 dictionaries to school children in Kihei.  She also said the tour of the meat processing plant was good and she wished more members had taken the tour.

  • Mark Harbison reminded members of the Food Drive on Saturday at Safeway, November 9.  Help needed especially in the afternoon shifts but come anytime you can.  All help is appreciated. Sign-up binder went around the room.

  • Gloria reminded the members to pick up their 2020 Theme Pins from her if they had not already done so.

  • Steve made a presentation on a lifesaver belt, worn around the waist as a prevention to drowning.  Asking if the Club would be interested in sponsoring the program.  It would tie into the Rescue Tube Project.

  • Handwritten letters from keiki thanking us for the school supplies distributed to our 3 elementary schools were sent around for all to read. Especially highlighted was the one Joanne read addressed to the "Rotisery Club of Kihei"!

The Magnificent, Magical Mustache Mini-Mini-Fundraiser (in lieu of our Magic Marble) began with our naturally-mistachio-ed guys and several ladies with their red, yellow and blue press-on fake mustaches along with a couple of Groucho Marx-style glasses/noses/mustaches. Their instructions? “Lock and Load your Mustaches!” Winners of the Blue & Pink ribbons were:  Charlotte for her fabulously fake red mustache and beard combo with jingle bells in it (19 votes) and Dennis for his natural one (9 votes). The smile factor was catching and we raised $175 in just 12 minutes. So sorry, to our Jay & John, not present with your own magnificent mustaches! Maybe next time. Those present were asked to suggest what they wanted the money to go towards: Polio Plus, Foundation and Rescue Tubes. Pres. Joanne will eblast members to vote on this windfall.
Guest Speaker: Randi Wagner, Board Member of the Kihei Community Association (KCA)

Ms. Wagner talked about traffic on Kihei streets and roads, and how it affects pedestrians, especially the students who will be attending the new Kihei High School on the  Pi’ilani Highway.  The KCA has been working to make the crossing from the new school safer. There have been 6 pedestrian or bicycle fatalities within a couple of miles of the school location. They have proposed under crossings, over crossings, and roundabouts.  The KCA is no getting much help or cooperation from the people who make those decisions.  KCA represents the citizens of Kihei, but they need more members—more strength with more voices.

A roundabout expert says that they are the best way to go.  They are designed to slow down but keep traffic moving.  It seems that the officials do not want to be bothered with suggestions, polls, or opinions.  Hawaii is ranked #1 in pedestrian fatalities in the Nation and #3 in bicyclist fatalities.  A real problem that needs to be addressed. During the Q&A, one member voiced the opinion that Round-a-bouts don’t work in high traffic highways or fast traffic areas as effectively as they do in slower and fewer traffic neighborhoods.

Rotary Foundation

Barry gave a short presentation on the Rotary Foundation.

Most of the money that is taken in by Rotary, 97%, goes to Rotary projects, not administration. We are a leading club sponsoring Global Projects thanks to Mark Harbison.  On of our major Global Projects are “train the trainers” in Pediatric Orthopedic medicine in Africa.

“Marooned Without A Compass Day”!  And aren’t we glad we are marooned on this island without a compass with only two directions to learn; mauka-toward the mountain and makai-toward the sea….easy peasy!  If you do not like that one, it was also “National Nachos Day”
