Announcements:

  • If you have new Background check forms (old ones are expiring between now and December)—give to Al Weiland. New ones will be good for 2 years. This is for reassurance for members to work with youth. I have a few extra hard copies. We need all of these in by 11/20 .

  • December Celebration Christmas party at noon on December 18—see signup. Please free up your work-time, get spouses/partners to join us; need a Santa, and sign up if you who want to exchange a fun $10 gift. Bring your Best Christmas story to share with table mates.

  • We grossed $175 in our Magnificent, Magical Mustache Mini-Mini-Fundraiser last week. Please read Joanne's emails carefully—she knows she’s probably speaking to the choir, but she underlines, bolds and italicizes what you have to do—there’s usually a time limit—please meet it. Yesterday at 6:00 pm was the deadline to have your vote to her for where the $175 from our Mustache vote. Thank you to the 21 members who answered. She also encourages you to NOT hit REPLY ALL—no need giving everyone your answer—too much email. Even if you’re thanking one person or a committee—we all will trust you’ll do this well and we don’t have to know that it was done. And if the answer is short—as was the vote—just add it into the subject line—you can even erase or shorten the Subject and add your answer and write EOM at the end ("End of Message"). No need to open the email—you are using the subject line as a text message.

Funds were voted to Go to Rescue Tubes.

  • BTW, 13 votes for Rescue Tubes and 7 voted for Polio Plus and 1 for foundation. So RT it is!
(Watch emails for new Board decisions).

  • Dave Ballaine underwent a successful a medical procedure on his heart on Nov. 12 and we all send him best wishes for a speedy and complete recovery.

  • And at next Wednesday’s meeting Win Schoneman our past DG will be visiting from Oahu and says he has a surprise for us. I opted for us to BE surprised!

  • Possible date for fundraiser 3/21/20

Today's Speaker
Ging Ging Fernandez, Department of Transportation, Gas Tax

A decline in the state’s gas tax due to vehicles using less gas because of electric and more fuel-efficient vehicles is anticipated.  The HDOT (Hawaii Department of Transport) is considering mileage-based fees instead of the current gas tax.  Examples of the proposed mileage based tax show that vehicles with a fuel average of 30 mpg will pay about the same as the current gas tax.  Low mpg fuel vehicles or electric vehicles will pay more.   High mpg vehicles will see a reduction in tax.

Mileage driven will be collected at the time of annual safety inspection checks.  The HDOT is asking for people to participate in the 36 month demonstration project.
