JANUARY 8, 2020

Wailea, Maui

Today's Meeting
Barry Rosenfield, standing in for  President Joanne, opened the meeting at 12:02 and welcomed all present.

Pledge of Allegiance was led by Past District Governor George Fontaine.

Inspiration by Karin Carlson:

Quote from President Calvin Coolidge - ‪"Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent.."

Hawaiian Word of the Day:  Mele Kalikimaka:

Mo’i Kamehameha IV declared Christmas a national holiday in 1862, this phrase was first published in the Hawaiian newspaper, Ka Nupepa Kuokoa (Independence, freedom, liberty). Bing Crosby song, 1949-50. Mele means ‘song’, Hawaiian has no /r,s/, so Kalikimaka is an approximation—sort of, and Mele has come to mean ‘Merry’.

Today's Speaker

Randy Miller  introduced  Kathy Becklin, the Executive Director of Grow Some Good.

Randy Miller  introduced  Kathy, who told us that Grow Some Good and Maui School Garden Network have merged. This is beneficial to all. 36 of the  43 Maui schools with 8,000 students now participate in school gardens programs. A program manager has been hired. Recent research shows that the food a child eats as a 4-year-old sets the stage for their food habits later in life, so GSG is expansing the program to include younger students. Peace Gardens are also being established at schools to provide a safe, quiet place for students, which has been shown to.

A zero-waste program has been initiated at Lahaina Intermediate. In this program, instead of throwing everything away in trash bins, students sort drinks, food, plastics, cardboard trays, unused/unopened items, and non-recyclable trash. Food waste is then carried in buckets to the Zero Waste station where it is converted into compost."When students are first-hand witnesses and participate in diverting massive amounts of waste from the landfill, they understand that they are part of something much bigger."
