Randy Miller introduced Kathy and Gaylyn from DOE who talked to us about Kihei High School. Gaylyn gave us an update of the project.

Phase 1 is almost complete. That includes the infrastructure to the site Mauka of Pi’ilani highway

Phase 2 includes awarding contracts for construction. That is in the process now. Construction should start in 2022, and students should be able to walk in the door by 2023-24. Several classes will be transferred in from Freshmen through Seniors then.

Traffic studies have considered an overpass over Pi’ilani, and underpass under Pi’ilani, or a round-about. The first seems to be the best, the 2nd is too costly, and the 3rd takes up too much room and will be problematic with so much traffic. One of these is necessary for students to walk to the makai side of the highway. One questioner asked if a bypass is being considered now around and up above the school site. The answer is that it is county jurisdiction, not a DOE issue. One question was directed to security. The plans are to have no special doors for lockdown.

We saw renditions of the proposed new high school with estimated costs up to $59,100,000; maps of the whole area include the drainage maps of the site. It will be quite the high school when finished.
