CLASSIFICATION TALK

Rotarian Janet Walker shared her experiences growing up, from a multicultural elementary school where she was the minority, to her interest in biology that took her into a medical company supplying product to NASA and ultimately into the nursing field. In nursing, Janet had the interesting experience of working at the hospital that served Folsom State Prison; patients were both guards and inmates. Janet’s parents have had a family home on Maui for many years; therefore, she is very familiar with the Island. She cares for her elderly mother and pursues other interests including being on the board for the American Association of University Women and she has a special interest in both the Nisei Veterans Memorial and the War Memorial.
TODAY'S SPEAKER
Bevanne Bowers — Maui Mediation Services
Maui Mediation Services (MMS), a non-profit company, has been provided creative and appropriate ways to solve disputes in Maui since 1982. Bevanne was a radio broadcaster then pursued a career as an attorney and mediation. MMS provides an effective and inexpensive way to resolve disputes quickly. Mediation is a voluntary and confidential process where two or more parties work out a mutually acceptable solution to the problem. The mediators are trained, neutral, third parties that facilitate a satisfactory solution to those involved. MMS has 39 trained volunteers that handle a wide variety of cases including domestic, consumer, personal, business, youth, landlord/tenant, accidents, business and most any imaginable case. They served 1,078 participants last year and 90% of those served would recommend the process. Referrals come to MMS from the County, Justice System and directly from people needing the service.
Being a non-profit, MMS receives funding from Maui County, Justice System, United Way plus fundraising. A recent grant for the benefit of seniors is in the works. Participants in the program are charged on a sliding scale depending on their ability to pay. No one is turned away.
The upcoming event at the MACC on October 12th features John Wilt singing Frank Sinatra Songs. The proceeds from this event are for the benefit of MMS.
