Happy New Year !!

President John told us that Jodene Hawkins, wife of Immediate Past-president Kit, was walking on Keawakapu Beach at 9:30 AM on December 29th when she heard a young girl out on the tip of the lava outcrop by the Mana Kai screaming for help. She then saw a man run across the beach with one of our yellow rescue tubes, swim out to the girl, help her get hold of the tube and return with her to the beach. She was about 8-years old and apparently was hit by a rogue wave while snorkeling and thrown onto the jagged lava. The girl was on vacation with her family as were the rescuer and his wife, who returned to California where president John was able to call and express a huge thank you on behalf of our club.

Last year we installed 40 rescue tube stands on South Maui beaches to help with just such a rescue.

WELCOME TO OUR CLUB LUNCHEON MEETING AT MULLIGANS
The meeting was called to order at 12:10 at Mulligans by our President John Moore. Each greeted those around them with hugs and handshakes.

INSPIRATION

Joanne Doelle gave an inspiration written by L Frank Baum.

“Imagination has brought mankind through the Dark Ages to its present state of civilization. Imagination led Columbus to discover America. Imagination led Franklin to discover electricity. Imagination has given us the steam engine, the telephone, the talking-machine and the automobile, for these things had to be dreamed of before they became realities. So I believe that dreams - day dreams, you know, with your eyes wide open and your brain-machinery whizzing - are likely to lead to the betterment of the world. The imaginative child will become the imaginative man or woman most apt to create, to invent, and therefore to foster civilization.”

Margie Flores introduced Allison Somilleda,
Senior Program Manager of the Best Buddies program on Maui.

TODAY'S SPEAKER
Allison Somilleda
Best Buddies began in 1989 at Georgetown University. It now has 1500 chapters at different colleges, high schools, and middle schools. In Hawaii there are 20 programs, 8 on Maui. Two hundred are involved in the program on Maui.
Those identified as IDD are paired up with other peers to become best buddies. They could meet once a month, or as often as daily with a variety of activities.

Allison spoke of three different students in this program and told why each benefited so much with the Best Buddies program.
The goal of the program is to create opportunities for one-to-one friendships, integrate employment and leadership development for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD).

MIC RIGHT
Joanne Doell is now the “holder” of the microphone and will welcome guests each week. She gave us a lesson in speaking into the mic, hold it straight out with to top of the mic 1” to 2” away from your mouth.
