APRIL 25, 2018

Wailea, Maui

Cynthia (Miss Sunshine),
Enjoy your National Parks tour!
THE MEETING STARTS
The meeting was called to order by President John Moore, at Mulligans at 12:05.  He welcomed guests, visitors, and members, then asked we share the aloha with hugs and handshakes.  Kit Hawkins led us in the pledge.
Bless Young shared an inspiration on perseverance written by Jonathan Greenleaf Whittier

John has been encouraging us to report acts of kindness we’ve seen or experienced in the past week.

Steve Moksnes volunteered to share one example.  Steve and Billie spent two hours Monday morning with a young woman exploring the possibility of separating from her husband.

Margie Flores shared she helped pay for groceries for a young woman ahead of her in a Safeway check-out line.

Steve Moksnes passed around the loose-leaf membership notebook.  He learned two have brought guests today, so he is paying $100 to Rotary Foundation.

John reported the results of the Maui Food Bank drive at Safeway last weekend.  Helping were 10 students from Lokolani Intermediate school, as well as 18 members from our club.  We collected more food and money than the last drive in November.  Money collected was $2114 in cash, and 40 boxes of food totaling 1475# of food.  John presented a big spoon to Tom and Jane Sawyer to help test whether rice or pasta has more staying power when eaten.  Mark Harbison was presented a spatula to flip all the Spam he is going to fry this evening for dinner.  Margie Flores was presented a paper fan to stay cool.

A thank you note from Lokolani school was sent around thanking us for the $2498 we gave them to purchase library books.

They educates and train people through the process of starting a new business using food products made from Maui agriculture.  They are part of the University of Hawaii and based on the Maui College campus and help businesses launch, act as a resource center helping with marketing, connecting with others, and promotinh the expansion of the businesses.

Cory showed us several pages of labels representing products sold on Maui as well as worldwide, that got their start on Maui.  Monies have been allocated to fund a building dedicated to MFIC that would include a test kitchen and space for retail of products.
