Joanne Doell announced that Public Charter School Kua O Ka La, whose Puna School was destroyed by lava in July, has received a $60,000 donation from our Rotary brothers & sisters in East Hawaii & Maui. (Kudos to you if you are one of those donors) and will re-open in Hilo in 3 different locations for pre-school thru High School students by August 20th. The students also received $4500 in school supplies from Pahoa Sunset Rotary Club, so parents don’t have that added burden as well.
President Joanne Doell presents a scholarship check to Claire Peck, our Seabury Hall Rotary Youth Foundation (HRYF) Scholarship recipient bound for NYU to study film and video production. Clair will be back next summer and is considering doing a short video on our club suitable for our social media needs!

Stuart Karlan invited us again to his concert at the MACC this Sunday afternoon. The Maui Chamber Orchestra and Chorus with the super-wonderful Cornell University Chamber Singers.
Today’s Speaker: Teena Rasmussen/Director/Mayor’s Office of Economic Development
Topic: Recap of the past 8 years.
Teena described the economic conditions 8 years ago…the great recession, drastic drops in visitors to Maui, as well as donations to all the non-profits in the County, and an unemployment rate of 9.5%.
When she started with the Arakawa Administration, she was tasked with stimulating the local economy. Through partnering with local organizations the administration helped to foster growth through such events as “Made On Maui” , small business revitalization via grants, the “Shop Small Maui”, opening the Business Centers for training and education, introducing the community building “Friday Town Events” (1st Friday in Wailuku, 2nd Friday in Lahaina, 3rd Friday in Makawao, 4th Friday in Kihei and 5th Friday on Lanai), strengthening the Maui Film Commission to attract film/commercial/TV filming to Maui County, creating the Maui Energy Commission which has saved the County more than $1,000,000/year in energy costs….and more.

Teena identified the Number One issue as affordable housing, zoning laws that need to be revamped, and cautioned everyone to be aware of a question that will appear on the November Ballot which would give the State the power to tax Real Property (currently a constitutional right reserved for each County) without any limits or restrictions.
