Inspiration
Smita Martinez shared a thought from Maya Angelou:  “When we give cheerfully and accept gratefully, everyone is blessed."
Hawaiian Word of the Day: Makahiki
Year or New Year/Winter Ceremony.  When we first see the Pleiades or 7 Sisters cluster of stars in the east at dusk this 4 month season begins.  Honoring the God Lono with offerings occurred and no warring nor conflicts were allowed, tithes were paid to chiefs, and food redistributed to all took place along with games of wrestling, racing, boxing. It was also a time of Peace, rest and rejuvenation in which to strengthen bonds and form new relationships.

Auntie Patty Hana Gomez and Marianne Vasquez, both from Maui, our guest speakers.  Frank and Judy Spees from Lake Tahoe and Kihei, Jodene Hawkins, wife of Kit, Barry and Pat Rosenfeld from Kihei, Harry Helliesen from Seattle, and Paul O’Rear and Penny Millar from Santa Rosa, CA.

New Member Induction

Mark Harbison inducted Barry Rosenfeld into our club.  Hugs and fist bumps welcomed him into the club by all members present.  Barry comes from California, and has been a Director of the Committee that supervises the Rotary Rose Parade float for several years now—has just moved to Maui.

Rotary Foundation

Barry Hyman encouraged all members to give at least $100 to Rotary Foundation each year.  He emphasized this organization spends 100% of all monies toward projects locally and internationally.  He listed those members who have already given this year.  Locally, we’ve been supported through these funds:  books for schools, KYC kitchen appliances, boots in Alaska for homeless, computers to KYC, and rescue tubes for beaches.  Internationally, money has gone through grants to vision care in Delhi, India, pediatric training in Africa, and projects in Africa and Bolivia. Barry asked all those Paul Harris contributors to wear their medallions on the first meeting of each month.

Kit Hawkins introduced his feather lei kumu, Auntie Patty Gomez and her friend Marianne Vasquez, who brought with them many feather lei to the meeting and gave us beautiful lei greeting cards.  Each has Hawaiian meaning, takes many hours to make, and are quite beautiful.  They have a store on Central Ave in Wailuku.  One can buy lei and other items there.  Lessons are available. Auntie Pattie also named the many parts of the lei of ribbon, feathers, beads and flowers and their relevance. She added that the god Lono’s banner that was paraded around the islands in ancient times flew several feather lei during Makahiki season. The need is great for practitioners of this craft.  Refer to:  handmadeonmaui.com for more information. Pattie’s shop is at 56 Central Avenue, Wailuku, Ph:  808 280-1517.

Stuart Karlan reminded us that, at the recycle center, we can ask them to send the redemption money to the club.

Special Makahiki Announcement
