The passing of the bell

On July 1, 2018-2020 President Joanne Doell passed the bell on to 2020-2021 President Dennis Bagshaw.

Many mahalos to Past President Joanne for two consecutive years of excellent service and thanks to Dennis for taking the reins. We're looking forward to a great new Rotary year under your leadership.

Joanne sends her special thanks to those Guest Presidents who stepped up to run our January through March meetings in her place:  Barry Rosenfeld, Kit Hawkins, Paige Fontaine, and Dennis Bagshaw for being in the batter's box for April when we phased out our face-to-face meetings and began our Zoom  online gatherings.

Our club graciously donated funds to cover parents' delinquent Breakfast/Lunch accounts at the end of the 2020 school year. This was for parents of "reduced" lunch accounts which, if unpaid in June, gets ported over to the new school year in August. All parents responsible for $75 a month for two meals for students who do not or cannot bring food from home. A family of 4 students would  have $300 in food costs per month.

Ron Harris’ $5,000 Challenge

Our grand total as of May 14, 2020, toward this challenge to offer donations to the “neediest of the needy”, was $6,630.

Our Board voted to send all the funds to MEO (Maui Economic Opportunity) and their Head Start families which will include Kihei’s families as well.

RCKW’s Own Foundation

We continue to move forward to make this a reality with PP Joanne beginning the process and Pres. Dennis leading the way. His Foundation Board will consist of Sherry LeMaster—Treasurer, Barry Rosenfeld—President, John Moore—Secretary, Mark Harbison—ByLaws, and Randy Miller. The Foundation should be completed in early summer.  This has been a long time in coming and Mahalo, Dennis, for putting this all together.

District 5000 Awards Submissions

Scholarship Awards

We are pleased to announce our awardees of the following Scholarships...

Hawaii Rotary Youth Foundation

Our $5,000 2020 HRYF scholarship recipient is Victoria Fonville from Kihei Charter School (since 6th grade). She has enrolled at the University of Idaho and tells us so far classes are scheduled to begin August 23rd and she’ll be in their dorms. Her major is Chemistry with an interest in Forensic Chemistry. She’s thankful Idaho has a low incidence of Covid-19 cases and regular classes are supposed to be face-to-face. She anticipates coming home to Maui at Christmas time and we hope to hear from her either on a Zoom meeting or one day as our luncheon guest/speaker.

University of Hawaii Maui Campus Dental Hygenist Scholarships

Our Dental Hygienists—two this year—each received $500 (enough to pay for one semester's worth of dental supplies, PPE's, etc.). These students were part of the team of students who did our Keiki first-grader Dental lessons on how to brush and floss teeth properly.  The recipients are Chelsey Kaho'onei and Brandi Heimburg, and we thank them for their dedication to community work and our Rotary projects and hope to hear from them in the future regarding their progress. â€‹
